HIST 2400 Collective Memory and the Historian’s Craft (4 hours)
This course is a study of the relationship between collective memories of the past and the development of identity at the national, local, and individual level. Examining controversial issues in history surrounding questions of commemoration and the politicization of history will reveal changes in the way modern historians think about the past and communicate with the public-at-large. We will explore key historiographical traditions of the past as well as innovative new approaches to the discipline, making this course an ideal introduction to the methods of historical writing and research.
