ENG 3600 Literary Publishing Practicum

A supervised, hands-on experience in literary magazine editing and publishing. Students work together as members of the Flintlock staff to produce Nebraska Wesleyan University's undergraduate literary journal. Enrolling in the spring semester, students lead the editorial and production process built on submission solicitation and outreach completed in the fall. Duties include evaluating submissions, making editorial decisions, editing accepted work, proofreading, and preparing the issue for print. Students gain exposure to magazine design and layout using Adobe lnDesign. The course culminates in a public launch event celebrating the published issue. Students also complete brief weekly "Magazine of the Week" presentations and selected readings on the history, craft, and business of literary publishing. The course meet once per week and requires approximately four hours of work per week, including meeting time. This course is repeatable for credit. Prerequisite: Completion of First Year Writing
